There are many benefits of using sign language with children who have special needs related to speech, language, motor or hearing disorders. Teaching sign language along with verbal speech provides a multi-modal system for learning: visual, auditory and tactile. Sign language is recognized as a true language and is the third fastest growing language in the United States! It is the only language that can be "spoken" simultaneously with another language. This overlap explains how using sign language facilitates communication development. When you sign with children you enhance their vocabulary and understanding of concepts. In turn, they are better able to communicate their needs and wants. As a result, childrens frustration level decreases, behavioral difficulties are reduced and confidence and desire to communicate improves. Another benefit is that children get repeated practice moving their hands in patterned meaningful ways through signing. This pattern of movement helps with motor planning, attention and on task behavior. Sign language is a tremendous communication tool for many children with special needs.
***Some children are just naturally late speakers. The benefit of signing with these kids is that they do not fall behind the curve. They are still learning the same concepts, just using sign in addition to spoken English. ***
